Walk 19: Woodlands Estate Accessible Walk 2

Woodlands Estate Accessible Walk 2 (less mud!)

Approximate time: 1.0 hours. Distance 2.9 km or 1.8 miles.

Starting at The Green, Heath End Village Hall on Heath End Road.

 1.⁠ ⁠Walk across Heath End Road, crossing into Wellington Crescent, noting the small community orchard on the corner with four fruit trees.

 2.⁠ ⁠Walk along Wellington Crescent and turn right into Mornington Close and walk straight following the footpath into the woodland straight ahead.

 3.⁠ ⁠Take an immediate left from the footpath into a Portway cul-de-sac.

 4.⁠ ⁠At the end of the cul-de-sac take an immediate right onto Portway and follow the pavement until you come to a footpath turning right just before you reach the garages.

 5.⁠ ⁠At the end of that footpath, you’ll find The Forge. The Shops are on your right. There’s a cafe, takeaways and Tesco’s. This area is known as The Forge as it was the site of the village forge.

 6.⁠ ⁠Now retrace your steps go back along the path and walk past the garages onto Portway.

 7.⁠ ⁠ Then right again onto Woodlands Road.

 8.⁠ ⁠If you’d like to visit the small community contemplative garden, keep walking until you reach the T junction with the little garden on your left. Retrace your steps.

 9.⁠ ⁠Alternatively, turn left down Woodlands Road. Turn right at Forest Close and go down the cul-de-sac on your left until you see on your left a path leading to the Long Grove playground.

10.⁠ ⁠Pass the playground with the Baughurst Community Orchard straight ahead and turn right down Long Grove following the road around to your left.

11.⁠ ⁠You’ll come across some woodland on your right, in a gap between the houses. Behind it are two major mounds that are part of the Baughurst or Borson Barrows consisting of nine Bronze Age burial mounds stretching into Brimpton Common.

12.⁠ Walk to the left around the barrow and pick up the bridleway on the Hampshire/Berkshire border (on the other side of the mound). House gardens are on your left and soon the school field will be on your right.

13.⁠ ⁠Stop at the back entrance to the school where there is a small gate (with tennis courts beyond) and there is a triangle with cotoneasters on your left. Turn left onto the footpath to meet a Long Grove cul-de-sac and follow this to the T-junction.

14.⁠ ⁠Bear right along the main part of Long Grove. You will pass the Baughurst Community Orchard on your left, with the Long Grove Play area in the distance. Follow Long Grove until you reach the T junction with Woodlands Road. The bus stop is on your left and you can catch the number 2 to Tadley, Basingstoke and beyond. On your right is the Parish Council Notice board.

15.⁠ ⁠Turn right along Woodlands Road. On your left, on the open ground, is the Parish Council Notice Board. Follow the road, crossing Portway and and Pinewood Close, until just pass the bus stop opposite the Hurst Leisure Centre. Bear left through the woodland entering on to Brimpton Road. Those with pushchairs or unable to walk on uneven ground should take the pavement route.

16.⁠ ⁠Bear left onto Brimpton Road, cross Hazel Green and join the grass footpath behind the trees on to Wellington Crescent. Continue on the footpath until you reach Lakelands and Poplar Corner with its magnificent chestnut tree. This area has drifts of snowdrops followed by daffodils in the spring.

17.⁠ ⁠Cross the road directly into the Withies area with its pond and contemplative setting.

18.⁠ ⁠With your back to the garden turn right onto Heath End Road, cross over Bishopswood Lane before finishing your walk at Heath End Village Green.
